The Cure for Mover's Remorse
It took only 15 seconds, but I did something today I’ve been dreaming about for a decade: I resigned a lease.
Ever since I moved out of Crumley Hall in 2000, I’ve been schlepping all of my worldly possessions (see above) from dorm room to apartment to dorm room (yes, again) to apartment. I looked to every new home with hope— this would be the one where I would grow old, or, at least...

It’s Easy Eating Greens
When it’s so cold outside that you can see your breath but can’t feel your toes, the last thing you want for dinner is a bed of lettuce. Too many hearty meals though, and you can’t catch your breath or see your toes. This winter recipe is super-healthy, simple to make, and looks quite impressive if I do say so myself.
Warm Spinach Salad
You’ll need:
1 lb baby spinach

It's cheap -- but can you swallow it? →
One of my favorite writers Sarah Hepola penned this hilarious story about fast food dollar menus for Salon. Fun fact: The Taco Bell Bean Burrito has been .89 cents for a decade.

Chicken Gumbo (for those who’d rather not to feel...
Gumbo is one of those wonderous Southern dishes that can be made a thousand ways depending on your mood and whatever’s in the fridge. This version is from my Mississippian grandmother, Oma. Her recipe calls for chicken instead of seafood, and includes okra in addition to the holy trinity of celery, bell pepper and onion. Although there is something comforting about having a chicken on the...

Pimp My Sandcastle
(I wrote this for a zine you probably haven’t seen, but summer is almost over, so read up.)
Children tote colorful plastic pail and shovel sets to the beach as if it were some kind of playground. But, like many wonders of childhood, such as bike-riding and swimming, building a sandcastle has become a serious endeavor. No castle is too big or too elaborate for today’s sand construction...

You and Me and Everything We Own
“Mommy, can I have this table when you die?” a 6-year-old version of me asked once about a drop-leaf maple dinning table that was probably not worthy of heirloom status. When I got an apartment during college, my childhood wish came true, and I moved the table from the storage shed to my dinning/living room. It served me well, but was no longer what my dreams were made of.
